Strengthening your muscles, like those in your abdomen and your back, will help by providing the rest of your muscles with a strong supportive core which will enable them to work better, this is important when the tougher, muscle defining, workouts are started.
What are the best exercises to start with when building a six pack?
Shiny new ab machines that take half the time as regular workouts and that can be stored under your bed might sound like a great idea but trust me on this, there are very few if any that don't get consigned to the darkest corner of the garage very quickly after they've been unpacked. The truth is, if you want that flat stomach then get back to using basic exercises because you already have everything you need to start working your abs without ever having to increase your credit card statement or decrease your storage space!
Sit-ups and crunches are your primary port-of-call as any other form of abdominal exercise will be to excessive to start with. There are many other exercises that will be needed to get perfectly defined abs but these two are ideal for providing the foundation for them.
Now - here's a tip when doing crunches, do not do them super fast as this will not give you the results you want. Rather, do each one nice and slow so that you feel the muscles in your stomach contracting and relaxing. The same principle goes for sit-ups - nice and slow rather than too quickly. As you gain strength in the mid-section, you can add a stability ball to add difficulty and give you a more intense workout.
Once you have a low body fat percentage and a strengthened core you will move onto more focused training and you will be absolutely astonished at the speed at which your abs will develop from that point on.
