Get Good With A Make-up Brush
Have you ever wondered why celebrities look so darned amazing when they walk down the red carpet
? Well, not only are they usually wearing a high couture frock, they have also had their hair styled and their make-up applied by professionals. So what about us mere mortals? Is there any hope for us in our bid to look our best? YES! Looking good is all about knowing how to make the most of what you have, which includes dressing to suit your shape, having a great haircut and applying your make up like a professional. And, whilst we can't dress you or cut your hair, we can teach you the basics of applying your make up to ensure you shine like a star.
Master the Basics
Your skin needs to be in tiptop condition in order for your make up to do its job properly. Treat it kindly by drinking eight glasses of water every day and going through the cleanse/tone/moisturise routine morning and night. Exfoliating three times a week and applying a deep cleansing treatment weekly will also keep your skin looking and feeling amazing.
To ensure you have a flawless base you need to apply foundation by dabbing it onto your chin, cheeks and forehead and rubbing it in all over. Use long, upward strokes and don't be afraid to blend the foundation under your chin. Make sure the foundation you choose is as close as possible to your natural skin tone and use a concealer to hide spots other blemishes.
Finish off with a light dusting of powder and you will have a stunning, dewy base from which to start applying the rest of your make up.
The Eyes Have It!
You can tell so much about a person from their eyes and it pays to give the windows to your soul some special attention.
To give the impression of larger eyes apply a thin layer of liquid mascara to the outer corners of your eyelids. Then apply a pale, light-reflecting eye shadow across the whole eyelid. Apply two coats of mascara (to both sides of your eye lashes) curling them upwards as much as you can.
Using a heavier amount of liquid eyeliner and taking it to the inner corners of your eye is a great start for glamorous eyes. On top of this apply graduated shades of eye shadow - a darker shade on top of the eyeliner, a mid shade in the crease and a light colour on the brow. Make sure the eye shadows you choose tone well together. Dabbing a tiny amount of light eye shadow into the inner corner of each eye will further brighten your eyes. Finish the dramatic look with two thick coats of mascara or false eye ashes, which you can then enhance with eyelash curlers.
To frame your face, you may need to draw onto your eyebrows with a pencil. Use brown or black (depending on your hair colour) and gently sweep over the brow to further enhance your eyes.
Cheeky!
Blusher is one make up area that can go horribly wrong leaving some poor unfortunate souls looking like a pantomime dame. To avoid this choose a soft, natural colour that blends well with your skin tone (as a general rule pinks work well on lighter skin tones and browns on darker skins tones).
Dust off any excess blusher from your brush before you apply it and go for the apple-shaped area of your cheeks. Use long, upward strokes and finish with a dab on your chin, nose, brows and forehead. Too much blusher really looks awful so don't be tempted to apply any more than this.
Lovely Lips
In days gone by a woman wouldn't feel fully 'made up' unless she had her lippy and gloss on, which she would surreptitiously reapply throughout the day. Thankfully the world has moved on and it is now perfectly acceptable (and indeed preferable) to use a nude lipstick or simple gloss when out and about in the daytime.
However, if you'd like to really go to town with your lippy at night then start by popping a dab of foundation onto your lips to ensure your lipstick stays in place. Draw around your lips with a pencil before filling in with your lipstick. Blot on a tissue, reapply, add a slick of gloss and you are all set to paint the town red!
