If you need help for sagging skin, don't worry
, help is on the way! Three has been a lot of research going on lately concerning the beneficial effect of nourishing natural creams, rather than expensive cosmetic procedures that don't last and don't really look that great. Here's a look at what the research has shown.
Everything really started with Retin-A, a topically applied prescription ointment that was originally approved for use as a treatment for acne. Retin-A is actually a synthetic form of retinol, the animal form of vitamin A.
The beneficial anti-aging effects that have been seen are probably due to the antioxidant activity. Although that has not been proven, I say it, because other antioxidant-rich creams have proven beneficial, as well.
Retin-A starts working in a matter of weeks, but there are negative side effects that include redness and itching. Those negative side effects could be counterproductive in the long run, because they indicate that there is underlying inflammation. That's no help for sagging skin.
Inflammation in the tissues eventually degrades collagen fibers. Decreased production and degradation of those fibers is what causes the skin to sag in the first place. Luckily, things didn't stop with Retin-A.
Researchers realized that there were multiple goals. One was to stimulate the production of new collagen fibers. The other was to repair damage that had been done to existing fibers. Scientific studies concerning burn victims and other patients had shown that protein bound to small amounts of copper and zinc was effective for regenerating new tissue.
A specific type of the protein keratin was found. It contained both zinc protein complexes and copper protein complexes. Researchers were able to emulsify it, so that it could be included as an ingredient in moisturizers. Did the clinical trials show help for sagging skin?
Researchers saw a 42% improvement in firmness after 18 days of use. How does it work? The protein complex does several things. It stimulates the production of new cells and fibers, while improving the skin's moisture content, which plumps it up. That brings us to the second challenge; how to repair damage done to existing fibers.
Most of the damage that has occurred is free radical damage, which is why antioxidants would be beneficial. They neutralize free radicals and repair damage that they've done. Researchers have decided that the antioxidant coenzyme Q10 provides the most help for sagging skin, because it improves the skin's moisture content by over 30% after six weeks of use.
If we combine the improvement seen with the protein complex, that's a 72% improvement overall. You can get another 10% by taking a fish oil supplement, according to another scientific study. Over time, you could see a 100% improvement. Is it long lasting?
Let's face it. We probably cannot expect to delay the signs of aging, forever. But, we don't have to look older than we feel. If you are consistent in your efforts and don't give up, you can find help for sagging skin in your own medicine cabinet.
