Attitude, aptitude, fortitude

Stop right now and write down three things that need to be done and you've been putting off. Chances are they fall into one of these categories:

Attitude, or state of mind, which includes such factors as fear of failure, fear of success, low self-esteem, shyness, an unwillingness to tolerate discomfort or unpleasantness.

Aptitude, your natural or acquired ability, which includes such barriers as indecision, uncertainty, inadequate information, unclear priorities, and inadequate skills.

Fortitude, or strength of mind, which includes such barriers as fatigue, stress, and illness.

Be honest as you categorize the three tasks. If you have the skill to do a job and you're not seriously disabled, the likely culprit is attitude. Remember, the only difference between stumbling blocks and stepping stones is the way you use them.

Take control of the fortitude barriers first

The truth is you can forge on and complete a job when you're tired, ill or stressed out, but you'll do a better job when you're fresh, energetic and in full command of your resources. Successful people optimize their health by eating, exercising and resting appropriately. Develop good health habits and remember that too much can be as debilitating as too little. A five minute nap, a brisk walk around the block or a fruit snack can often provide the energy boost you need.

Schedule tough jobs for when your energy is high. If that's morning, block out the time you'll need without interruptions and tackle the tough job first thing. If you're a night owl, schedule tough jobs for an hour or so after dinner -- and eat light to avoid getting drowsy.

Recognize aptitude blocks as strength builders

Just as most of us are either left or right-handed, we also opt for situations that are either task-oriented or people-oriented. Those who are task-oriented often seem to get more done, while those who are people-oriented get more done through other people. Or to paraphrase Charles Schwab, "A man with a skill will always have a job, and a man who can train and motivate others to use their skills will always be their leader." An entrepreneur must learn to do both. Ignoring either area makes as much sense as opting to work one-handed.

To overcome aptitude blocks, start right now building your task and people skills. Make a list of all the skills needed in your business, everything from answering the phone to making sales calls to balancing the checkbook to negotiating price to fulfilling the job/product requirements to delivery, invoicing and follow-up. The successful business is an aggregate of a lot of individual tasks and routines. Business failure is usually triggered by one or more of these routines breaking down.

Sort your list according to whether a skill is primarily task-oriented, such as writing a proposal, or people-oriented, such as heading the committee. Put a star beside the skills in which you excel, a check beside those for which you feel adequate, and a box beside the areas where you need training or assistance.

Notice that the definition of aptitude is natural or acquired ability. Your business includes responsibilities that may stretch your natural talents yet cannot be ignored. You have choices: you can learn to do the thing yourself or delegate tasks to someone who has that skill. Your choice must not be procrastination.

In each box on your list, place an L for learn or a D for delegate. (The art of delegation may be one of the skills you want to learn.) Now, prioritized the list and get started. Business is like the 10 speed bike: you keep it moving forward or it wobbles.
