Though the exact methedology of action of this drug is not yet known, being an antihistamine zyrtec is known to cross the blood brain barrier only slightly to inhibit eosinophil chemotaxis and LTB4 release while not causing any sedative effect as a result of that.

Zyrtec is available both in tablet and syrup form. Cetrizine tablets are available as white, film-coated, rounded-off rectangular shaped tablets in 5 and 10 mg strengths. These are taken orally with or without meals. However, chewable tablets are also available. These come in grape flavour and are purple in color. These are basically meant for children.

The syrup form is a colorless to slightly yellow syrup containing cetirizine hydrochloride at a concentration of 1 mg/mL (5 mg/5 mL) for oral administration. This comes in varios fruit flavours such as banana, grapes etc.

Zyrtec for allergy and allergy symptoms is a highly safe medicine which can be even taken by children of above two years of age with no known toxcity or contraindictions. The very rare and mild side effects are dizziness, dry mouth, nausea and headaches.
