Mice can spell trouble for many home owners. Being able to fit through a size as little as a ball point pen, mice scurry around gardens and homes, sneaking into your walls, kitchen pantry, roof spaces, even your clothing draws!

Mice don't care where they are as all they need is readily available food and shelter to make a home for their family. Mice carry disease and can cause structural damage from electrical faults and fire and breed quick and frequently. Usually the first sign people see when they have mice is by noticing their droppings or possibly gnaw marks. When you have an infestation, getting rid of them isn't easy - but should be done thoroughly. Read on below to find out a few tips on how to prevent and eliminate mice around your house.

Take out the trash

Mice love rubbish, so make sure your trash is in sealable bins or tied up bags. This will take away a potential food supply. The smell can also attract them, so don't leave the rubbish lying around too long, even if it's outside.

Clean out the backyard

Mice like to nest in old wood piles or sections of your yard that don't get used often. If you have old garden clippings or rubbish lying around your yard - get rid of them. This includes things like old furniture and even appliances. Mowing your grass is another good way of keeping the mice at bay.

Check your home

Mice generally get inside through holes and cracks around the house, so do a short check around the outside of your home and block off any potential entry points. Also make sure the food in your pantry is sealed so mice aren't attracted as much, and have less reason to hang around.

Clean up after your pets

Cats are great for scaring away mice, however dogs can sometimes do the opposite - so be careful. Dogs don't bury their droppings like cats and these can attract mice to your yard, so be sure to clean up after your pup. Also, if you feed your pets outside, make sure you clean out their bowl of any leftover food so the mice don't come searching for it later.

If you have a mouse running around the house, you shouldn't try to handle it on your own. One mouse may seem easy dealt with via a mouse trap, but they breed quickly and you will often find there to be more hiding.
