Get Rid Of Your Acne!
Acne is a disease of the hair follicles of the face, chest and back that affects almost all females and males during puberty. It is not caused by bacteria but, bacteria plays a role in it's development.
Acne can form into blackheads or whiteheads or tender red bumps which we all know as pimples. If they get very deep, they can turn into pustules, cysts or boils.
There are a lot of myths regarding Acne so, let's clear them up right now.
Acne is not hereditary. Everyone has some Acne at some point in there life.
Food does not cause Acne. People often think pizza, chocolate, greasy fried food, and junk food will cause Acne. While I have to admit, these foods are not good for your health, they do not cause Acne or make it worse.
Being sweaty does not cause Acne. You do not have to shower instantly after exercising in fear that the sweat is going to clog your pores up. Excessive washing can actually dry and irritate the skin.
Being dirty does not cause Acne however, being dirty can lead to other skin conditions as well as parasites. Wash once a day. Do not wash yourself or your hands too much because along with drying you out, it will actually make yourself more susceptible to germs.
Stress does not cause Acne but picking at pimples because of stress does make them last longer, so try to leave them alone. Also, any pressure to the skin like helmets, chin straps, collars or suspenders can all aggravate Acne.
There are some things that do make Acne worse.
Some medications may cause or worsen Acne. Iodides, Bromides or Steroids like Prednisone to name a few.
Some occupations can produce Acne like exposure to industrial products that have oils in them and you get them on your skin.
Some cosmetics and skin care products are actually pore cloggers so make sure you read the ingredients and choose ones that have water listed as the first or second ingredient. Water based products are safe for Acne prone skin.
So, how does Acne actually start?
It happens when oil glands that are attached to the hair follicles are stimulated at the time of puberty by elevated levels of hormones. The oil is a natural substance which lubricates and protects the skin. It increases in production during this change as the skin cells mature. This in turn can clog the follicular openings or pores. The hair follicle enlarges, producing a bump. As it continues to enlarge, the wall may rupture, allowing irritating substances and normal skin bacteria access into the deeper layers of the skin. This produces inflammation. This inflammation is what produces the pimple. If it goes deeper, this is what produces a cyst or boil. If the oil breaks through to the surface, this is what causes the whiteheads. If the oil becomes oxidized, it will turn from a whitehead to a blackhead. Blackheads are not dirt like everyone thinks.
So what do you do?
Most Acne products that are available at a drugstore or cosmetic store will work fine on your Acne to keep it under control, but some cases can be really bad and you will have to go to a physician for treatment options.
The main things you want to do is unclog the pores, kill the bacteria and minimize the oil. Despite what you read, there are no magic products out there that is going to work for every person and every Acne situation. What does work for everyone is washing once a day with a mild cleansing liquid soap like my personal favorite Neutrogena. Other good ones are Dove, Basis, Purpose and Cetaphil. These are all fairly inexpensive and can be found in most stores. They will keep the skin clean and minimize sensitivity and irritation.
To kill off the bacteria, buy a separate cleanser that you use after your first cleanser which contains Benzoyl Peroxide. This will reduce the bumps and leave your skin softer and cleaner looking as well as kill any bacteria that are in the open pores. One thing about Benzoyl Peroxide, it causes red and scaly skin irritation in a small number of people, but this will go away as soon as you stop using the product. Also keep in mind that it is a bleach, so do not let products containing Benzoyl to touch colored clothes, shirts, towels or carpets.
Next you will want to use an exfoliater and mask. These products contain fine granules, Glycolic Acid, Alpha Hydroxy or Salicylic Acid. All of these ingredients are very mild and act as peeling agents. These products will remove the outer layer of skin and will open your pores. Again, Neutogena has an entire line of scrubs and masks that work wonders for your skin. There is a product called Retinol (Not Retin-A, That is a prescription medication!) that is a derivative of vitamin A and promotes dead skin shedding which will also help to open your pores.
You cannot stop your oil glands from producing oil. You can use a gentle astringent/toner that wipes away oil. Look for the products with the ingredients I mentioned earlier, Glycolic Acid or Alpha Hydroxy.
Finish up with a topical application. These products come in gels, creams and lotions which you apply to the affected areas. The active ingredients are Benzoyl Peroxide, Sulfur and Resorcinol. There are products on the market like ProActiv that have these ingredients but they are ridiculous in price. Just do some shopping and look for these ingredients (Now that you know what ingredients you should be looking for). There are tons of them out there that have all these ingredients and you can get them for 1/2 the price.
The last step you can take is to regulate your life a bit better. Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep each night. Eat 3 good, healthy meals a day and drink 8 glasses of water. And last but not least, never pick at your pimples. Playing with them or popping them will only make them redder and stay longer. I know you think that if you get the puss out, it will heal quicker. This is not true, it can actually cause indents and scarring.
Treating Acne takes patience and consistency. The treatments I mention may take several months before they start to do there magic, so don't give up. If you have side effects like dryness or irritation, it is important to give each treatment enough time to work. The side effects will go away! Just hang in there. If dryness or irritation gets to be too much of an issue then you should be consulting a dermatologist for your Acne situation.
