A strong building can be built only on a strong foundation the same holds good for

software process improvement, actually any process improvement initiative. Be it movement from no processes to an ISO or CMMI ML2/ ML3 or ISO to CMMI or movement from CMMI low maturity (i.e. CMMI-DEV ML2/ ML3) to CMMI high maturity (i.e. CMMI-DEV ML4/ CMMI-DEV ML5) the base that we set when start the initial journey or the initial quality framework determines how successfully we will be able to sustain the same and how successful will we be when we move to higher maturity.

In this paper the author describes the implementation challenges that most of the organizations face when they strive to move to higher levels of maturity i.e. CMMI High Maturity and what they can do at ML2 or ML3 so that the transition to the higher levels is smoother.

A brief abstract of the paper is as given below:

"Organizations embarking on L5 journey must be mindful of two age old sayings what's well begun, is half done and to get through the hardest journey we need take only one step at a time, but we must keep on stepping". The secret to a successful L5 thus lies in a good start followed by a good run.


This paper first describes some of the generic implementation challenges that need to be managed to start and run a CMMI journey. It then describes the specific implementation challenges faced during maturing an organization towards meeting CMMI L5 expectations. This paper then proposes how the CMMI model itself (specifically, process areas like OPF, OPD, OT, etc.) can be used to start and run a successful L5 implementation and further elaborates upon the concepts and practices in the CMMI model that provide ways and means for the same.

Organizations which are already L3 can use the approach and the information described in this paper directly to start and run their L5 journey. Organizations which are non-CMMI can use it to first drive the L3 and then L5.

The decision to embark on the CMMI L5 journey is a major decision for any organization.

It not only requires significant dollar investment but can also have disruptive effect on the existing systems and processes. Significant effort may be required for the following:

* Mentoring of project teams and especially the managers on statistical thinking

* Refinement of measurement system to provide data at sub-process level

* Characterization of processes in quantitative terms (standard deviation, mean)

* Improvement of processes in quantitative terms (variance reduction, target shift)
