Get Started Web Writing: Work From Home, And Make A Great Income

It's been 15 years since I started writing for the Web. I got my start creating my own sites, and writing content for my print clients' new sites. However, I kept up my magazine writing commissions, until Web writing became more lucrative, as large companies established their sites and started to hire writers.

These days, I have more Web writing clients than I can handle, and because I'm visible online, people approach me daily to write for them. Even if you're just starting out, you'll find that getting writing jobs online is easy, because there are unlimited markets. Let's look at a couple of them.

Firstly, consider online publications. These may be print magazines which are moving operations online, or more commonly, new Web publications which need writers. Introduce yourself at these publications, and you'll quickly get some commissions.

Here's something to be aware of: build your own presence and visibility online. The more you get known, the more you'll be approached with offers of writing opportunities. Companies are always looking for good writers, so one of your primary aims should be to get known.

Business sites are an excellent market too. Companies need your words for their online operations, both internal and external. If you're an intermediate level freelance writer, start sending proposals to companies touting your Web writing skills.

You can also send proposals to companies proposing blogs. Blogs are mainstream now, but most companies don't have the expertise to create a blog and manage it. Enter you, the enterprising freelancer.

Start sending query letters and introductions to companies every day. They may not need you immediately, so ask them to keep your information on file. Another way to get jobs quickly, is to get work through the online job marketplaces: thousands of Web writing jobs are posted there every week.

Of all the opportunities you'll discover in writing for the Web, blogging is the most profitable. Companies need bloggers, and your contracts will extend over months, and even years.
