My sewing room is now officially a disaster area and my desk has become the playroom
of two mischievous little boy kittens! I had the bright idea to foster a pregnant cat, Molly, in my sewing room. It worked well for the first two months after her five kittens were born. But, now that those babies are 5 months old, they have destroyed the room completely. Unfortunately, I was only able to find a home for one of them. The others have not been introduced to the rest of the household population because there was always too much going on. Three pregnant or nursing queens have had my house in an uproar since February, especially when two of the mothers died, Patch in childbirth and Monkey when her four kits were barely a week old! Its now the end of August, and I am as well-versed in kitten care as any veterinarian could ever be.
I went in to feed Mollys crew two days ago, with the vague thought of getting started on making quilts for the winter. At first, I only noticed my hand-dyed fat quarters scattered all over the room. Then, I noticed that my embroidery table seemed awfully empty, as well as one wall that was newly blank. Those cats had knocked my entire stock of stabilizer for quilt embroidery off the table and torn my custom covered cork board off the wall and destroyed the cork board! My beautiful porcelain fairy doll had been knocked to the floor, thankfully cushioned by the fat quarters, but her gossamer wings showed definite signs of chewing. Dress form on the floor? Check. Storage drawers knocked over? Check! Wall quilt now on floor? Check!!!
Jumping Judy on a Pogo stick! I love cats, but this was much too much for me! I fed the cats and picked up as much of the mess as I could. My embroidery quilting supplies are now in a clothes basket in my closet while everything else is down in the basement. I really dont have time for this! Molly got a finger thump on the head and a scolding to keep her babies in check. She just rubbed me and purred while the babies twisted around my ankles. What does that mean?
So, when Id much rather be concentrating on my embroidery quilting and the new machine embroidery designs Ive gotten for that purpose, Ive been spending most of the past two days setting up our front patio, more of a balcony, to receive five cats, four of which have never been outside except for the balcony outside my sewing room. The only other cat that can get up there is Tipsy, Mollys boy from her first litter. So, they should be safe out there until I can find a better solution.
The covered part of the patio, outside the dining room, has become their sleeping area, complete with a table to provide additional coverage and several boxes for sleeping. The larger open area outside the living room now contains their new litter boxes, yes I said boxES, a couple of scratching post jungle gyms, and a bunch of new plants and flowers that I repotted last evening. If I cant be making quilts, at least I got to enjoy some gardening! A storage bench with all of their necessities inside finishes the look.
With the weather cooling off and the annual rains coming soon, I had so looked forward to making quilts as I do every winter, followed by exquisite stitching with machine embroidery quilt designs. Instead I have so much else to do! The cats will be moved outside today. So, instead of planning my quilt embroidery, I will be keeping an eye on them to make sure they arent too upset. Once they get used to their new environment, I will have even more work.
The sewing room truly is a disaster room. I need to take stock of my quilting supplies and re-order anything that cant be salvaged. Then, I need to clean every surface, untangle threads, and more. I even need to rewire one of the speaker cables for my stereo that was chewed through! Oh, and new curtains. They destroyed the old ones months ago.
Oh goodness.
Maybe Ill just move the cats outside and then spend the rest of the day dreaming about making quilts. Its much easier than everything else, and much more satisfying too! If I can keep little Pookie and RumTum occupied elsewhere, I might even be able to do some planning/designing on the computer without their little paws helping me with the keyboard and mouse. Well, I can dream anyway!
