Animal rights activist Yvette Dobbie and her architect husband Steve have created a beautiful

, safe haven for themselves and their pets in Laguna Beach, California. Decorated with an eclectic mix of furnishingsincluding mixed and matched antiques they found during their travelsYvette and Dobbies 1923 French Normandy-style beach cottage boasts a beautiful, romantic master bedroom.

The couple splits their time between their Santa Fe and Laguna Beach homes, driving back and forth numerous times throughout the year. But the two dont mind the drive, as they share a passion for antiquing. More often than not, they stop at each sale along the 13-hour drive, collecting unique wares for their home.

When it comes to selecting their antique purchases to decorate their home, comfort always comes first. Our home is French-country shabby chic with a huge emphasis on comfort, a common thread in all our homes, Yvette says. We wanted a place where our friends could come in, take off their shoes and sit anywhere they want without it feeling fussy, and I think weve achieved that.

The master bedroom features an ornate vintage fireplace decorated with seashells, thick embellished crown molding, and a ceiling fan with flower-shaped glass shadesall crisp white or cool cream for a calm, romantic air. The antique four-poster beds pale teal frame adds a subtle splash of color to the room. Next door, the master bathroom boasts a large Jacuzzi tub, Carrera marble surfaces, leaded-glass French windows and a crystal chandelier that continue the bedrooms cool-and-collected feel.

Arrange your furniture to create an intimate seating area for two people

Combine new and old collected items for a more personal touch. Use accessories that reflect your personal interests to add a personal touch to any space.

Bring in the sunshine. Theres nothing more charming than natural light and views through bare windows. I deliberately dont have window coverings in many rooms and only gauze sheer ones in the master bedroom because I love to let the light in, which makes a room feel very bright and airy.

Hide all electronics: exposed audio and visual equipment is an eyesore. Store them in armoires and dressers and when the budget allows, install in-wall speakers.

To make a small bedroom seem bigger, expand the space visually by bringing in an oversized piece of furniture. Whether its an armoire, writing desk or large four-poster bed, it will instantly make the room seem larger.
