Did you know that the modern wheel chair is really a modified wheelbarrow

? The very first simple version of the device goes back to 600 B.C. A very early image of a wheel chair was depicted upon a recently discovered ancient Greek vase. The Chinese actually used wheelbarrows to transport both people and large goods. It wasn't until 525 B.C that specially made wheeled seats were used to transport disabled humans. Images of those rough versions in many cases are found in Chinese art that goes back to this period.

Europeans later started using wheelchairs in the 15th century. One of the popular designs came about in the mid 18th century, and was the brainchild of James Heath who hailed from Bath in England. His device was known as the Bath chair, or also called the invalid carriage. The contraption has a glass front along with a folding hood which could be opened and closed. Often decorated with a high Victorian style, the carriage was very comfortable and utilized to transport the disabled that were going to the spas in Bath. It was mounted on 3 wheels and could be pulled or pushed by a slave or servant. The carriage could also be modified, and by mounting it on four wheels it could then be pulled by a horse or donkey. These carriages were also popular in the early 1800s in towns that featured spas, like Tunbridge Wells and Buxton. Later versions utilized a type of steering device inside the vehicle, in which the occupant could be in charge of the steering of the carriage.

The very first lightweight, collapsible wheelchair was created in 1933. It had been made by two mechanical engineers, Herbert Everest and Harry Jennings. Everest had unfortunately broken his back in a mining accident, and so the two friends got to work on a device that would help him with day to day living. After discovering how easy to use their invention was, the 2 engineers realised there was a massive commercial potential to manufacture their chair and sell it to the general public. Everest and Jennings designed wheelchairs are in fact still on the market today, obviously constructed with modern materials and many design improvements.

There is large number of wheelchairs available, ranging in price as well as the materials used. There are also walkers and scooters available for people with different needs or disabilities.
