Get Your Car Ready For A Mot

All vehicles on the road in the UK that are more than 3 years old need an MOT to be legal

. Many people simply take their car for an MOT and risk it failing. This is a bit short sighted, since with a few simple checks you can significantly increase your chances of your car passing the first time. A second MOT will normally cost you money as well as time, so it is worth trying to get your car through the the first test.

Do not take a dirty car to an MOT. Your lights have to be clean to pass, and the tester has to be able to clearly see everything underneath the car. Clear out your boot too, so that the tester can check the spare tyre.

Check your handbrake, if you have to pull it up a long way before it engages, you may need to have the cable replaced. Press the brake pedal down and if it feels spongy have your brakes checked.

Check that your car runs in a perfectly straight line when you lift your hands off of the wheel. Do this off the road, for example in a car park away from pedestrians or other cars. If your car drifts to the side, get your steering looked at. Test the shock absorbers too.

If you have chips on your windscreen, get them repaired prior to the MOT. Likewise, if your wiper blades leave smears, replace these too. Top up your screen washer prior to the test.

Check the exhaust system for leaks. Ask someone to hold a thick cloth over the end of your exhaust. Apply the handbrake and start the car, it should stall almost immediately. If it does not then you have a leak in your exhaust system, which will have to be repaired prior to the MOT.

Emissions tests for an MOT are very strict. It is not always possible to know if your car will pass this part of the test, but if your car is belching black or smelly smoke find out why and get it fixed.
