Get Your Summer Style On!

Fall and winter require a skilled hand at textures and layering

. Fashion during spring and summer, on the other hand, requires a whole other approach. Achieving maximum style with minimum heft (and fabric) might sound contradictory, but it's definitely doable with the right pieces. You just have to get into that fun summer vibe and dress accordingly.

Lighter Suits

Summer might mean lighter, less insulated fashions, but you shouldn't by any means let yourself go sloppy. The sharp gentleman cannot go for long without a suit. Office staples like navy and gray, however, can make a pleasant day unbearably warm, especially in the daytime.

A lighter suit - one in khaki or tan, for example - should be spot-on for the season. Not only does it shake off the stuffier trappings of gray or navy (even when you're wearing a tie) but it also keeps you much cooler. Don't worry about looking too casual; throw on your (preferably black) leather belt and shoes, and you'll be as office-ready as anything.

One significant difference with a lighter suit is that it doesn't come on as strong as its darker colored relatives. A white shirt and nondescript necktie, while a classic combo, will most likely lead to your looking dull or washed out. Keep your outfit alive with a bright shirt or a stronger than usual necktie. Look to pastel pinks and greens, which are very lively but don't lose out on formal style.

Trimmer Accessories

You might not plan to take up the flip-flop and tank top uniform of the beach set, but you should definitely consider trimming down on the accessories now that it's getting warm. Leather and metals aren't the materials of choice anymore especially since neither one is particularly agreeable with heat and sweat.

Consider canvas accessories, which go really well with just about every casual style in existence. Canvas belts (especially ones in dark colors like navy) create a strong but laid-back preppy feel, especially when paired with khaki or white pants. Boat shoes made of canvas, meanwhile, have long been a warm weather fashion staple. Pick up a pair if you decide to lose the leather wing tips - and the socks.

Even bags can do with a bit of a canvas upgrade. Canvas bags are tough, and have the added advantage of easily transitioning from gym bag to office carrier to vacationer's carry-all. A tote is arguably the most versatile (not to mention the most fashion-forward) style, but other options like backpacks and duffels work,

There are several ways to lighten up your office wardrobe, too. Cotton neckties are very popular replacements for their silk brethren, especially since they're less hefty. The fact that they look fine when wrinkled is just a bonus so that you can loosen them with ease on warmer days. Knot cufflinks, which are usually made of cotton, are also great stand-ins for heavier metal pieces.

Brighter Colors

You know it's fall when the trees get more vibrant shades; for summer, your wardrobe takes over those duties. The heat and the bright sunshine sets the stage for more shocking shades, even ones that don't usually go together.

Try on accessories that give your outfit a pop of color, like a vivid necktie or a dramatic belt. From there, you could experiment even further with a vibrant color shirt or tee - blues and reds tend to work well on most skin types - for even greater effect. Use them in your outfits one a time so that you won't have to worry so much about anything clashing with anything else.

Clashing, however, is a slightly more permissible offense of fashion during summer. You're bound to see other men in 'ketchup and mustard', a combination of red and yellow that looks like the condiments, or wearing a strong color with another strong shade. Try it yourself if you'd like; there's no better time for it than now.
