The ball should not be initially be thrown to longer distances and a signal should be used to divert the dog failing which he starts playing with the ball instead of fetching it.

The owner should be patient and support the dog by positive reinforcements such as rewards and treats once he finishes a good performance and behaves well. Appreciation helps to encourage them to behave and obey orders.

Lively atmosphere must be created by the owner otherwise the dog might get distracted from fetching by some other activities.

It is no longer a difficult process to train a German Shepherd to fetch.
