Get to Visit the "Venice of America" – Fort Lauderdale
When dreary winter comes along, you could take an overseas vacation to the Mediterranean or a tropical island in the Bahamas or Southeast Asia
. Or just take a domestic trip to sunny Florida where the tropical Atlantic breezes are just as good as any from the Pacific.
One tropical coastal city is Fort Lauderdale, home to about 5.4 million Americans and gets visited by twice as many local and foreign tourists every year. Known for its canals and waterways stretching to a total of 165 miles within the city and bleeding into the Atlantic shorelines, Fort Lauderdale is the "Venice of America."
A Major Water Fun City
Just 23 miles off Florida's capital city of Miami, Fort Lauderdale is home to the country's finest nautical adventure land. It is a major yachting center with more than 42,000 yachts moored to over 100 marinas and boatyards. Seven miles of golden sandy beaches line its coast and offers water fun activates that can take more than a day to enjoy.
Go water-skiing, wind surfing and jet skiing to your heart's content. Thrill to a kayak or canoe adventure at a fresh water lagoon at the Hugh Taylor Birch State park or go spelunking along its nature trails. Or you could trek to one of its marinas for a day of yachting and a cruising, deep sea diving or just snorkeling.
Other Place to See and Visit
All these bring tourist dollars to the city whose economy relies heavily on it and has promptly made the city a nautical wonderland but with all he sybaritic comforts of modern living.
You can stroll along its Riverwalk or a visit to museums of arts and culture, shopping and culinary delights in any of its 4,200 restaurants around the city. Or you can visit the Museum of Discovery and Science to vicariously experience nature trails in the Living in the Everglades exhibit.
The museum also features the largest living Atlantic coral reef indoors and not in the open seas. You can take a simulator trip to the Moon or Mars. The museum houses more than 200 interactive exhibits with a five-story IMAX Theater screen.
The downtown city proper offers the same cosmopolitan attractions of any major city on earth. Take a walk along the Las Olas Boulevard dotted by high rise hotels and condominiums, commercial centers and shopping malls. For the sports-minded, you can visit the Swimming Hall of Fame Museum and the Fort Lauderdale Stadium, home of the Baltimore Orioles. And for a cultural feast, take a load of the plays, concerts and musicals at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
