I can't think of any business alive today that couldn't benefit from at least a minor presence on the web

You don't need an elaborate website unless you are getting into ecommerce - selling goods and services on the web.
For many small businesses a simple informational website that allows people to see what you do, see who you are, see what you provide and see how to contact you is enough. Don't worry initially about how great a site it is or how many people are going to visit it. Just get up and running.
