Getaround: The Metroflats.com For Car Rentals

Its amazing the things you can find while surfing the Internet

. I recently came across a site that reinforced this for me. That site is called GetAround.com. What is it exactly? Well its a car rental service that uses a similar set up to MetroFlats.com, a start up vacation rental service. Get Around has taken that model and applied it to car rentals and from an early look at the site, it seems very impressive. So how does the site work exactly? Well, Ill give you a quick run through.

Since the site is still in a beta phase, none of the specifics I will mention are set in stone, but the general ideas should stay the same. The concept is simple: users from around the country can post their rental cars on the site, allowing other users to browse through an extensive list of cars. Users can search rental cars in their neighborhood. Once they find a vehicle that suits their needs, the two users can arrange a key-swap, completing the transaction. Much like MetroFlats.com, GetAround has no monthly fees or dues, making it an ideal site in this tough economy. In terms of pricing on the cars, the web site offers pricing suggestions based on similar cars, and the owners are then able to set an hourly, daily, or even weekly rate for their vehicles. Get Around claims that by renting out your car for only 15 hours can net you more than $350. Thats a pretty sweet deal, if I do say so myself.

Renting your car to a complete stranger might seem scary, but GetAround.com allows the owner to approve the rental before its completed (much like MetroFlats.com), and the company has a master policy that insures the car and replaces the owners insurance for the rental period. Also, GetAround.com car rentals requires whoever rents the car to return the car at the gas level it was at the time it was rented.

Its going to be interesting to see if this website gains any traction, but from the early results, it looks like its going to be a quality site. It will probably be solid competition for other car rental companies like ZipCar and UberCab, which also uses a similar model to MetroFlats.com.
