Content spamming is a kind of underhanded search engine optimization that aims to

change the way in which a search engine perceives the contents of a page. There are a few methods that can be used to accomplish this.

Placing hidden or visible text right on the web page by disguising keywords and phrases is one of the most popular forms of content spamming. The keywords and the background are the same color, concealed as small font or concealed in the HTML codes, ALT attributes and "no script" areas. This assists in luring a web crawler.

However, another well known spamming method is referred to as keyword stuffing. In this method, the keyword density or ratio of keywords to other words on the webpage is raised by inserting hidden, random text on the page. This method has become very popular and is considered to be white hat SEO. Formerly, indexing programs determined levels of relevance by merely counting how many times a keyword appeared. The majority of modern search engines are able to analyze a page to find keyword stuffing and make a determination as whether the frequency level is abnormal. Meta tag stuffing, repeating keywords in the Meta tags and utilizing keywords that have nothing to do with the site's content, is a similar practice.

An additional SEO method that can be used is known as "Gateway" or doorway pages. These are web pages of low quality that include minimal content; rather, they are loaded with key words and phrases that are quite similar. They are intended to have a high rank in the search results. Usually on a doorway page, you will see "click here to enter" in the middle of the page; this link allows you to progress to an aspect of the site that is more people friendly. Because this kind of content spam is used so frequently, it is considered to be acceptable.
