Sizing up the Okidata C5100 printer quickly reveals a model from the manufacturer

that's meant to print out in both monochrome black-and-white and color. In addition, it can be connected to a workgroup network or used just as a standalone printer. It will work well within a home environment, and the Oki 42127403 is able to produce graphics-rich documents and presentations with ease. Currently, a refurbished unit costs between $380 and $450.

When it comes to the speed of the printer, the C5100 performs at a high level in both monochrome and color modes. Monochrome pages will emerge from the printer at over 20 per minute while this particular Okidata is able to put out 12 pages per minute of color product. This last is actually a very high level of performance when the printer's overall price is taken into account.

Paper holding capacity is also a fine 400 sheets, contained within two different trays. One is a manual paper feed while the other is contained within the printer and slides in and out. Optional trays can raise the amount of paper held within the printer by 500 additional sheets. It can also accomplish double-sided printing with an optional duplex unit, which is an added bonus.

Okidata made this printer to use a variety of Windows operating systems, including XP, as its host server. This means that it'll make use of the PC to process print jobs before sending those same jobs to the printer. The included built-in networking capability, though, means that many more users than just one will be able to make easy use of the unit.

This being a color printer, it'll be the case that four separate Okidata C5100 laser toners will be required. As with other color units, black, magenta, cyan and yellow cartridges will be the norm. A particularly nice aspect of the C5100 is that it'll still perform well even if one of the cartridges has run dry. Replacement cartridges, though, can be a bit expensive at about $150 for a set, though they also last for a long time.

There are a number of different ways that this Okidata printer can be connected to a network. This includes modern USB 2.0 and Ethernet 10/100 Base-TX ports. In essence, it'll be a snap to take the printer and connect it to either a PC or a network workgroup in short order. The C5100 also was designed by Okidata with twice the RAM and twice the speed of its predecessor printer's memory and processing units.

When it comes to those to capabilities (RAM and processing speed), the memory that comes standard with the C5100 is a more-than-adequate 32 MB. This can be upgraded all the way to 288 MB, which should be more than sufficient for most any network. Additionally, the 200 MHz processor will be able to take in many tasks and then turn them around with little trouble or delay.
