Getting A Web Design Job
Getting a web design job can be confusing, if you get hung up on what the titles of different jobs are
. A lot of people want to be 'Webmasters' or 'Web Designers'. In reality, they may already be into a part of this industry that will let them work in web design, but if the title doesn't contain the words 'web design' in it, then they don't believe it's the industry they're in.
The fact is, there are many different titles of jobs that relate to the web design business. You may be a producer, or a writer, or a copywriter. Even editors, copyeditors, graphic designers, layout artists, digital developers, information architects, and many other job titles, are actually in the web design industry. So don't get stuck on titles thinking you aren't working in the web design industry.
So when you begin your search for a web design job, if the title contains 'web design' in it, keep looking at it. But even if it doesn't, you still need to keep looking. Find a description of the job and see if it contains any other keywords like 'HTML' or any of the terms listed in the paragraph above. While being a copyeditor isn't being a web designer, at least your in a place, earning money, where you can work your way into actual web design. These other jobs hang around the perimeter of web design and allow you close proximity, and a starting point for getting into the web design field.
Let's look at a couple of these 'other' jobs and what they entail. Say you nailed a job as a 'web writer'. What you're probably going to be doing is blogging and advertising. This can be pretty rewarding if you know what you're doing. Or you could even run your own personal website. This way, while showing off your web design skills, you can also push any other interests you may have. Another area is 'Web Reviewer'. With this job you'd be writing reviews about movies, books, art, games, etc. These are just ideas for doing things 'around' the web design industry.
One mistake that many who try to get into freelance web design is not taking their own sites seriously. They do shoddy work, and their site feels like they're saying "I'm busy and don't have the time to keep up my own site". This is a big mistake. Your own site is the best advertisement you're going to have, and it should be your most exceptional work. It's putting your best foot forward. It's a statement about you as well as the quality of work that you're capable of. It should be the example of what you can do, because it will be there for all to see.
Getting a web design job means being armed with at least the basics. These would be CSS, HTML and XHTML, and know how to optimize images. There are things that people will look at when you apply for jobs that you need to steer clear of. A lot of them will turn away from table-based layouts. They're 'invalid XHTML' and don't give an air of professionalism. Using the tag is another sign you're not with it. It's been outdated for years. Don't use any slow loading images that load in the browser. These are painfully dull. And using old HTML is easier than the XHTML, but using XHTML will tell the person looking that you know what you are doing in web design.
