Getting Accustomed to the Twitter Environment

Getting Accustomed to the Twitter Environment

Especially for those of you who joined Twitter on your own, without really knowing anyone else in that environment, being on Twitter may feel like being the new kid in school. You desperately want to fit it, to be a part of the experience, but you still feel left out.

As excited as you get when someone "Follows" you back, you get equally disappointed and frustrated each time you hit that refresh icon and no new Replies or DMs show up on your screen. It can seem so hard to get noticed or to feel like anything other than the invisible man or woman on Twitter.

At first, the Twitter-stream can seem like a fire hose of random conversations, statements, comments, and broadcasts going on all around you. It's more like trying to socialize with anyone and everyone in busy hallway rather than being a student quietly raising your hand waiting to be called on in an organized classroom environment.

But, as you get more familiar with the environment, you will start to notice that even though there doesn't seem to be any organized structure to this free-flowing Twitter stream, people do seem to congregate as virtual groups. Envision it more as an endless number of circles that all overlap each other in different ways.

Certain groups of people interact with and follow the same set of people -- as it should be, like attracts like. And, soon, too, you will begin to recognize the popular people within these constantly morphing pseudo-groups. Some groups will be more interesting than others and your tastes will change over time, too. It's easy to be on the periphery of a broad range of circles of people on Twitter.

Getting into deeper conversational threads does take a little more effort to get the knack for. Since you are the new kid on the block, more often than not, you will generally need to initiate the dialogue. It's most common to start by sending the occasional one-time reply comments (not necessarily expecting a corresponding reply, but appreciating when you unexpectedly do get one).

Other than replies, you'll realize that you will never really know who reads what. Sometimes your Tweets will get read. Sometimes they'll be skimmed or skipped entirely. Sometimes people will mark your Tweet as a Favorite. Occasionally you will get a re-tweet. And, less frequently, but most desirably, you'll get the coveted reply. The key is not to be offended by the apparent lack of attention, it by no way means that you don't deserve to be there as much as any one else does. And, it doesn't mean that your Tweets aren't being noticed by others either. There is a lot of information for everyone to sort through.

And, be rest assured that for the most part, people on Twitter are pretty friendly even though they may seem non-responsive, aloof or standoffish at first. Be friendly, be patient, reciprocate, and share good information freely. Just as your Follower count will organically grow on its own, so too will your re-tweet and incoming-reply rate.
