Getting Away To Whitley Bay

There are many different seaside towns and cities spread across the UK

, none as famous as the seaside resort of Blackpool. What many people fail to realise is there were once a number of different towns that rivalled Blackpool in popularity, the residential seaside resort of Whitley Bay was one of the main competitors. Although not as well known as the town of Blackpool, this extension of the historic fishing village of Cullercoats is still a popular tourist destination. Whitley Bay became increasingly popular during the Victorian era, although its history extends back to the 12th Century; it established itself concretely as a holiday resort during Victoria's reign.

The town's close proximity to Newcastle upon Tyne and a handful of other Industrial towns being scattered nearby, the small bathing town of Cullercoats gradually expanded north to accommodate the larger and larger numbers of holidaymakers who sought to get away from the hustle and bustle of the cities they fled from, escaping from the various factories and mills of industrial Britain in which they worked so hard. Whitley Bay was the ideal escape, with fresh sea air and beautiful golden sandy beaches, a huge contrast from inside the dreary city limits.

Whitley Bay was popular with families and day trippers for many decades, with amusement parks, shops, cafs and arcades springing up around the huge selection of cheap accommodation that was now available in abundance. It remained this way until the 1960s when budget package holidays abroad became available on the market, the static climates and exotic new experiences attracting those families that had remained loyal to Whitley Bay until that time. That was not the end of Whitley Bay, however, as even today it is popular with day trippers, stag and hen parties and young people looking for a cheap holiday, with a fabulous nightlife.

There is plenty to see and do in Whitley Bay, with miles and miles of clean golden sands and clean, safe sea water so visitors can spend their visits sun bathing and swimming. All around the beaches of Whitley Bay there are a number of the usual seaside amusements, shops and cafs for those who have had enough of the beach. The Whitley Pleasure Dome, also known as the Spanish City Funfair, no longer houses the same arcades as it did during most of the 20th Century, but instead is now a centre for leisure and tourism after getting its long overdue facelift.

All those holidaymakers looking for a bit of art and culture and not just the vibrant nightlife, will find something to suit at the Whitley Bay Playhouse that houses a 630 seat auditorium, corporate suites and bars as well as lounges with some rather spectacular sea views. The weekend holds a unique atmosphere when the younger generations arrive in droves from all over the UK to sample the nightlife and blow off some steam, before returning to the daily grind. Whitley Bay has everything you need for a weekend getaway, whether you are looking for a relaxing escape, or just to party all night long.
