Attempting to get today's kids to appreciate the traditional kids games that many parents grew up on may seem like a daunting task, but it truly doesn't have to be. With the myriad of video games available in today's market, children have lost the ability to get back to basics. Games like Monopoly and Scrabble don't have to be played electronically to be fun! It's time to break out the board games for a family evening of fun. The entire family can participate.

It can be fun for all family members when one night per week is designated as a family night of fun and games. However, the fun and activities do not need to end with classic board games. One traditional kids game which can be parlayed into a game for all ages is charades. Kids especially love to act out words and phrases or guess what the other is gesturing. In the case of large families, players can be split into two teams.

Other traditional kids games include chopsticks, mahjong and Chinese checkers. Siblings and friends can play together, and for added fun, mam and dad can join the action as well. Today's kids have seemingly forgotten the fun of playing simple games such as solitaire. This can be done as a solitary activity on a rainy day, and it will keep the kids occupied while mam and dad require some peace and quiet time. Alternately, marbles can be fun, exciting and challenging for young children.

Lego and/or Duplo can provide rainy day activities for youngsters. It's good for hand and eye coordination as well as inspiring creative minds. Building sets are also a traditional way of providing entertainment for the kids.

Don't forget etch-a-sketch and Spirograph for fun and creative playtime! These games will provide hours of endless fun for the little ones on rainy days or after school time projects. These are traditional and classic games which will never be outdated.

Outdoor games may include old favorites such as horseshoes, beanbag toss across and badminton. Guaranteed to inspire memories in older generations, and provide entertainment for young an old alike. On warm summer nights, or cool autumn days, who can forget favorites such as hide and seek, curby and Chinese Whispers?

Most young girls have loved hopscotch for generations. This is a great game of coordination and physical activity. With the many varieties of colourful pavement chalk now available, kids will have a blast expressing themselves. Hopscotch is a great form of physical fitness as well.

Getting back to basics and enjoying the simple pleasures of traditional childhood games can be exciting. It's also a fun way to remove the kids from in front of the television and video console for a while. Using their minds and bodies is a great concept.
