Getting Equipped Through Fire Safety Training

Especially in large organizations like in an office or corporate set-up

, providing ample fire safety training for the personnel is crucial in fire preparedness. There are many different training modules to address different situations and circumstances and there are many things to consider in coming up with an adequate fire safety training.

Fire safety training relies on the results of the fire risk assessment. Formulated emergency procedures should be fully explained to the people, detailing the work activities and the individual duties and responsibilities of the staff in fire situations. The training sessions must be conducted regularly in order to keep the training information fresh in the minds of the participants, and should be done during the normal working hours of the personnel involved.

The fire safety training modules must be comprehensive and encompassing, yet simple and basic enough to be understood by the staff. After the training, random fire drills must be conducted in order to check on the effectiveness of the training program.

The Different Aspects of the Fire Safety Training

The basic training of where the fire exits are and what to do in case of fire may be done for small establishments. However in large organizations such as offices or supermarkets, careful and meticulous planning must be made for setting up an intricate training program.

The people should first be trained on what actions must be taken when they discover a fire, how to announce the fire by triggering the fire alarm and what to do upon hearing the alarm. There must be proper education on the steps to take in alerting building occupants of the existence of fire and leading them to the nearest fire exits.

There should also be ready arrangements in notifying fire and rescue service at the soonest time possible.

The fire safety training must also include an evacuation plan which clearly identifies possible refuge points and locations where people can assemble away from the fire. It should also layout the location of the different fire fighting appliances and equipment for use by the designated first response fire fighters, and should also identify clearly the location of escape routes, including the inconspicuous exit ways.

The correct way to open fire doors as well as the need to close these doors to prevent heat and smoke intrusion, and the spread of fire, should also be included in the fire safety training module. It should also have special modules on stopping machines, motors, elevators and similar processes during fire, and the correct storage procedures for flammable or combustible materials. On top of this should be pointers on how to maintain good housekeeping as a preventive measure against fire occurrences.

Organizing A Fire Brigade and Keeping Checklists

The organization should have a fire risk assessments & fire safety procedure brigade team headed by a fire marshall with the team's primary duty being the addressing on all the aspects of a fire situation. There should also be documented checklists to guide the organization into what activities there are in the fire prevention and protection process.
