If you're contemplating getting healthy, your first port of call will often be heading to your local gym to take out an annual gym membership

. And although a gym membership is a fantastic way to lose weight, they can work out costly.

Therefore, if you want to lose weight but are on a strict budget, follow these 4 points to drop pounds without breaking the bank.

1. Get walking - the cheapest form of exercise, walking is fantastic as it can be done anywhere and everyone can fit it into their daily lives somewhere.

For some, it might be easy, as they could simply jump off the bus a few stops earlier than they normally would and walk the extra 10 or 15 minutes to work.


For others, however, it's not as easy, such as for someone who works in a remote location and has to drive from their home to their car parking space outside of their work each day.

In an instance like this, it is still possible and it simply requires a little more thought. They could, for instance, take a 30 minute walk on their lunch break or even just walk up and down their stairs when they get home for 15 minutes - it might be boring, but it gets the exercise done.

2. Prepare your meals in advance - if you leave the decision of what you're going to have for dinner an hour before you're going to have it, you're likely to put something together that's quick, easy, relatively unhealthy and works out expensive, especially if you decide on a takeaway.

Spend time on a Sunday preparing what you're going to have for dinner for the week and you'll find that your meals are still as quick and easy to prepare, but are a lot more healthy and more financially friendly.

3. Buy in bulk - generally speaking, the more of something you can buy, the cheaper it will be and this is something that relates to almost every thing in life.

Although you won't be able to purchase some foods in bulk quantities, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, as they're likely to go out of date before you get the chance to eat them, others, along the lines of pasta and rice, will keep for months. Therefore, whilst it's more expensive to buy a larger bag of them, it works out cheaper in the long run as it will last for a greater number of meals.

4. Do it with a friend - unless you need to lose weight before a specific date (for example, so that you can fit comfortably into your wedding dress), what motivation have you got?


Whilst becoming healthier should be your primary reason, it's actually not likely to be over important to you after the first few weeks, as it's a long term goal and as you won't see benefits straight away.

Due to this reason, it's generally recommended that you work out with a friend, so you can carry out some friendly competition in your weight loss programme.

This may not help you save money in one sense, but if it stops you from going back to an unhealthy and generally more expensive lifestyle in terms of your diet, then it could in fact save you a substantial amount of money.
