If you have the "golden idea" for breaking into filmmaking

, you often may find yourself stymied by the sheer cost of producing a Hollywood-style big budget blockbuster. But this doesn't have to be the case, as this article will hopefully try to point out. The essence of a successful film is a good story well told. If you want to engage your audience focus on the plot. What makes your story unique? What will make your audience members want to stay tuned until the very end? Focus on the driving action of your story. Remember to be realistic. There are certain things you just simply won't be able to do. But creativity will win out. While you can't manage that big, flying-car car-chase over the streets of Manhattan, you can imply such a chase or simply drop it altogether in favor of something even better. You shouldn't have to crack your wallet too wide to make a good picture. There is just so much that if cheap or free out there. Use your imagination and you will succeed like no one before has ever succeeded. Make use of the best stuff you can rent, but never, never buy if you can help it. Also, software is often the least of your concerns. Go for the open source whenever possible. Plan ahead as much as you can. Upon finishing the basic script, come up with a shooting outline. Break your story down into scenes and your scenes down into shots. Plan ahead and you will succeed. As much as possible, this pre planning or "pre-production" as it is called will save you on time down the line when it really matters. Think about all the different angles you will need. Then plan out what actors you will need when and where you will need crew to help you with your shoot. Leave nothing up to chance. Avoid mistakes down the road by planning now. If you are renting equipment, one less day of shooting can mean saving hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars. If you are paying people, that means a little bit less that you have to shell out for crewmembers and actors. Finally, don't be afraid to fail. Those who are afraid will never succeed. You don't need a college degree from a film school to rent a video camera and get some of your friends to act for you. And this is the best education you will ever have, ever in your entire life.
