Getting Out Of The Hum Drums With Fruits And Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are loaded with nutrients that keep our bodies strong and healthy
. A diet rich in whole organic raw foods reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as strokes, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, some inflammatory diseases, and heart disease. You know this; you've heard it all before, but if you're just not sure how to get enough raw vegan goodness into your diet and continue to find yourself a bit bored by your choices. Have no fear; I am here to show you how you can change that effortlessly and deliciously!
Fruits are easy for most of us. They are Mother Nature's version of candy. It's veggies that most folks tend to have difficulty with, so let's make that our primary focus.
Most people eat the same 5 - 7 varieties of vegetables over and over again. Think about it; what were the ingredients in the last salad you made? I bet visions of that same old lettuce you've used for years popped into your mind with perhaps some tomato, cucumber and croutons which may sadden many of you to know that croutons don't count. Come on let's face it, that same old thing can be just plain boring!
Try adding a new variety of leafy greens such as spinach, Swiss chard, kale and dandelion; as for lettuces the list is endless. Challenge yourself to add one new green and or lettuce to your eating experience every week.
Then once you get your green groove on, try adding more variety to your salad base like grapes, berries, raisins, craisins, olives, nuts, seeds, sprouts, avocados and beans. I like to add marinated mushrooms and veggies like broccoli, cauliflower and baby corn. One of my favorite things to add to my salads is grains. Try adding a cup of wild rice, quinoa or other grain for a hearty healthily meal. Whatever is seasonal, fresh, local and organic can be added to take that hum drum salad from boring to bodacious, big, and beautiful.
Get Juicy! Juicing is an excellent way to start your day. It provides a boost of energy and more raw vegan nutrition in one glass than many folks could possibly eat in one sitting or even a whole day. Stick to the rule; use 1 sweet vegetable, such as beet or carrot, or an apple to 3 other veggies and make sure at least one of those is a leafy green. This will ensure that your juices are as delicious as they are nutritious!
If you don't have a juicer I strongly urge you to get one but in the meantime, try smoothies! Smoothies are also an excellent way to avoid temptations when hunger strikes between meals.
Here are a few smoothies that are sure to satisfy your taste buds and fill your belly:
1. blend 1 apple, 2 carrots, a big handful of spinach, and cup of water.
2. Blend 1 cup fresh pineapple, 10 leaves of kale, 1 medium - large banana, and cup of water.
For a frothy smoothie add some ice.
Bottom line here is, try new things! Next time you are looking around your produce area or farmers market, buy a new vegetable every time you shop.
