Getting Ready To Move? Avoid Stress By Planning Ahead
Are you gearing up for a big move? Moving can be an exciting time
, but it can also be very stressful. One of the most important tips I could give someone who is about to move is to be prepared. Thinking ahead and makeing a checklist of what needs to be done can save you loads of time and avoid headaches in the long run.
Here's a tip to help you get organized and ready to move:
Purchase And Set Up A "Moving Organizer" - You should make a moving organizer for all of your notes, receipts, and important information. A simple3-ring binder will do. Make sure it has pocket dividers to separate sections, and plenty of loose-leaf paper for your notes.
You'll also need to have several things on hand to be ready for the movers. Here's what you'll need:
1. Markers to label boxes - Preferably wide tip, black or blue permanent ink.
2. Moving boxes - Sometimes the moving company will provide these. If not, visit your local liquor store or food market ahead of time and ask the owner to put some aside for you. If you are a customer, they'll be glad to help you out.
3. Newspapers - Used for wrapping breakables and acting as cushioning.
4. Packing "peanuts" or bubble wrap - This stuff is great to put in between dishes and other fragile items.
5. Packing tape - Duct tape works also, but clear packing tape is preferred.
6. Scissors or utility knife - For cutting boxes, newspaper, and tape.
One of the biggest secrets of moving success is eliminating as many items from the move as possible. Sometimes there is so much going on that you can forget to get rid of things that you don't need. Here are some items that are often overlooked:
1. Cable / satellite receiver boxes/dishes and remote controls - This covers modems as well.
2. Borrowed clothing - If you have borrowed clothing from friends, now is the time to return it.
3. DVD and video game rentals - You'll want to remember this especially if you are moving a long distance away.
4. Library books (neighborhood and school) - Again, pertains to distance. You don't want to end up having to mail them.
5. Tools (borrowed or rented) - Yes, it's time to give the neighbor back that monkey wrench you borrowed 6 months ago.
6. Trash cans / recycle bins - Most of the time you just have to leave these out front if they belong to the city or town.
You'll also want to have some extra cash handy on moving day for emergency expenses, deposits, tips, and anything else you'll need. Having small children and pets watched on moving day can eliminate a lot of stress and confusion, especially while you are taking care of all of the other important details.
If you are moving into or out of an apartment, arrange to use the elevator on your move day and let the neighbors know what is going on. This can work in your favor, because some might even offer to help. If they do, accept!
You should also number each item in the order that you want to move it, leaving smaller items and boxes for last.
Here are a couple of other important tips:
1. Remember to empty, defrost and clean your refrigerator at least 12 hours before moving day.
2. Keep several things with you, instead of putting them in the moving truck, such as toys for the kids, a book or magazine to read, eyeglasses, prescriptions, and a change of clothes and toiletries.
You never know what's going to happen on moving day, and it's better to be safe than sorry.
