There are several homemade recipes that helps remove dog odors and stains. The most popular are water and vinegar mixture. You just have to mix 3 cups of vinegar into a cup of water. Before you set on the solution to the area, you must first open up your windows and doors because this mixture will result in a very strong vinegar odor. Set the solution within the spot for several minutes then use a towel to soak.

For stains on carpets, make sure that you blot up all the vinegar in the area. Baking soda is a good product to remove the smell but you have to test it first to make sure that it doesn't remove the color from your carpet. When applying a baking soda, you have let it dry before vacuuming the spot.

Other effective homemade recipes are a mixture of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and dish soap. This is also effective but it usually leaves discoloration effects on most carpets. This can't be noticed right away since it usually takes time and needs some sunlight to take its effect. Using this mixture may alternate the urine smell with a faded spot.

There are also commercial products that are available in the market that proves to be effective in removing pet odors and stains most especially the ones that have already dried up. This usually happens when you're not around when your dog peed and you can't locate the exact spot where he urinated. In order for you to find the exact spot where your dog went, a black light is usually helpful in searching for these spots.

When you find the spot, you can now use a commercial product of your choice to apply in the specific area. The most effective products are the ones that contain enzymes since it breaks down the urine and kills the bacteria that cause the smell. You just have to leave on the product for a couple of hours before blotting up the residue.
