Getting Rid of Lice From Your Home
If you've had a recent head lice infestation, you may be finding it difficult trying
to free your home and your family of all signs of the parasitic insects. Getting rid of lice for some parents is an ongoing battle, one that never really seems to be won or lost. However, there are a number of treatments and techniques you can use to make getting rid of lice a much easier task.
Develop a Strategy
If your attempts to deal with your infestation dilemma have only focused on the host, then the chances are this is where your problem lies. Many parents simply treat the host, without first developing an effective strategy and plan for tackling the problem as a whole. Having a plan is crucial, as you will need to work with factors like the lifespan of the louse in order to combat them effectively.
Step 1
Look online for different solutions, treatments, and techniques for combating infestations. Decide in advance the treatments you want to use, and stock up with the required tools and chemicals for that chosen treatment.
Don't just treat the members of the family who are showing signs of an infestation; instead, treat the entire family. By using homemade alternatives, you will be able to provide cost effective treatments for the whole family, without worrying whether or not your treatment is a bit of an overkill. Besides, it sometimes takes time for the insects to develop so treating the entire family makes sure you are not missing any hidden insects on the other family members.
The smothering technique, white vinegar and tea tree oil are all firm favorites of parents who have managed to successfully get rid of their infestation problems from their home.
Treat the whole family in a 24 hour period. It is imperative that you then retreat the entire family, using the same treatments as before, 7 10 days after the initial treatment.
The most important tool for getting rid of your infestation is the nit comb. Make sure you purchase one from your local pharmacy. Use the comb on both treatment days, and use the wet combing method every day in between treatments to reduce the risk of reoccurrence.
Step 2
Immediately after applying the initial treatment, it's then time to tackle your home. A surviving louse can lurk and linger in bedding, clothes, towels and hair care items for up to three days (without interaction from a human host) and even a single adult can lay many eggs, restarting the infestation if given the chance.
Vacuum mattresses and vehicle upholstery.
Hot wash, tumble dry or dry clean bedding, clothes, linen and towels.
Place plush teddies into a Ziploc bag or an airtight container, and leave for two weeks.
Soak all hair accessories in a suitable cleansing solution to kill any possible insects hiding in them. Alternatively, throw away the items, and replace them.
Make sure you repeat the entire cleaning process when you repeat the family treatment.
Step 3
Completely eliminating the insects from your family is one thing, but how do you stop them from returning to your home? The truth is, you need to talk to your family, and explain how the insects are able to move to and from hosts. This will allow them to adapt their behavior slightly, helping to prevent the head lice from making a swift return.
