Getting Started as a Photographer

One of the most rewarding hobbies that can actually turn into a money making career is that of a photographer

, but how do you get started? Just because you take wonderful pictures at family events and other social functions, does that mean you have what it takes to make money at it?

There are several ways in which you can tackle your start as a photographer and really which one to go with all depends on you. Here are different ways that you can go about turning your hobby of photography into a business:

-Trial and Error: This is for the person who likes to learn in a hands-on capacity. Invest as little bit of money in a camera and then invest a lot of money in taking and developing pictures. Create what you feel to be a good portfolio of shots and begin to show them around. Try to find others in the photography business to critique your pictures and learn as much as you can from their feedback. Just be sure that you wear a thick skin because some people critique harsher than others. But you can't take criticism as an insult, rather take it as a learning opportunity and use it to get better.

-Schooling: There are many colleges and universities that offer photography classes. You can take one or more classes and again simply learn all that you can. The teachers of these courses are usually professional photographers and the information they provide you with can be invaluable.

-Intern: Just as with many other professions, it is possible to intern for a professional photographer. These openings tend to be limited and are usually only low paying part-time gigs, but that can actually be good as you can keep your current job until your skills as a photographer flourish. Take the opportunity as a paid learning experience. Again, you will be working with a seasoned photography pro and their insight and information can be an enormous boost in your photography career.

-Online: It is now easier than ever before to get started as a professional photographer thanks to the Internet. There are many online outlets where you can sign up for an account, pay a small fee, upload as many pictures to your account as you like, and sell your pictures for whatever price you set. Most of these types of places handle all the billing and money collecting for you and take a small commission for their efforts. This is a great way to earn a little side money, or to perfect your skills and make a full time living.

Once again, there is no one way that is better than the other when getting started as a photographer. What is good for you may not be good for someone else and vice-versa. You may even want to do a combination of one or more of the techniques until you find what works best for you. One thing is for sure though; there are plenty of opportunities to get started as a photographer so what are you waiting for?
