Getting Textbooks for Less!

A college education is getting more and more expensive

. Pair the increased costs of a higher education with the current economy, things don't look good for college students! But there are ways to keep college expenses down, especially when it comes to text books.

Textbooks are one of the most costly aspects of a college education. You buy a book at the beginning of the term and then try to sell it back at the end. Unfortunately many times the school isn't using the book anymore so they won't buy it back for very much, if at all. So what are some options when it comes to getting textbooks inexpensively?

Probably the first bit of advice you need is to shop around. Don't buy all your books from the campus bookstore. You are almost sure to pay a premium price there. Find out what books you will need for you classes then visit websites such as textbooks.com, half.com, or amazon.com. By visiting a variety of online stores you can find competitive pricing. Most of them will even buy your books back at the end of the term. Textbooks.com offers a guaranteed buy back price on some of their listings. If the book is part of the guarantee program, the buy back price will be listed next to the book when you purchase it.

Another option for cutting textbook costs is to share books. Many times friends or roommates will be taking the same courses. This is usually the case with freshmen or those who are taking general education courses. If it is possible, share the cost of the book and then work out a system where you can each use the book for homework. You many need to draw up a contract so you both know the sharing terms. At the end of the semester, share in the buy back money as well.

If none of these options work for you, talk to the teacher to see if you really need the textbook. Many times you will buy all the required books for a course only to find out you don't need one of them. As the instructor if you will use the all the required books or if you can get by with course handouts and notes. Many times this will be enough.

A college education is a valuable asset to have, but it is also expensive. Finding ways to cut costs while you are furthering your education is a must and getting inexpensive textbooks is the perfect place to start.
