Getting The Best Bounce For Your Curls

Whether your hair has been permed or you were born with natural waves

, curly hair requires special care to keep it bouncy and beautiful.

Curls can be difficult and often unruly. A natural rebellion often erupts from curly hair when you even get near it with a brush. Quite often, the more you try to tame it, the wilder it becomes.

Curl care starts with proper cleansing. Start by using a shampoo that is specially formulated for wavy hair. Make sure you concentrate your shampoo at the scalp area for the best results. A complementing conditioner can be focused on the hair shaft and the tips to help keep your locks soft and under control.

Curly hair is naturally subject to bouts of dryness, so maintaining adequate moisture levels is an important part of the care routine. Your body produces natural oils from the sebaceous gland, which will help maintain hydration and nourishment to your curls. Shampooing too often can wash away these natural oils, so if possible, try to wash every second day rather than daily.

Tight tooth combs and hair brushes can be trouble for curly hair, often leading to breakage, damage and much dreaded frizziness. A quick run through your wet hair with your fingers will help keep the tangles from building as your hair dries, without causing any damage.

Curls will spring up as the hair begins to dry. If at all possible, it's best to let your hair dry naturally by air. However, if you must use a blow dryer, use one with a diffuser. A diffuser will cascade the air from the blow dryer, meaning your curls will not get blown around and tangled.

If you must comb your hair, wait until it is dry and stay far away from traditional combs and brushes. Using a wide toothed pick will allow you to give your curls a quick tidy, without pulling or snagging. When it comes to styling, use products that are made for curly hair to avoid weighing them down. Rather than fight with your curls for control, find a style that goes with the flow. Talk to your stylist or look for pictures that will enhance the natural direction your waves like to take.

Curly hair offers a romantic distinction not found in straight hair. Don't hide your curls with a straightening product, instead show them off and have a little fun with your bold and bouncy hair.
