Getting The Job You Want

Are you reading this right now from a desk in a place where you really don't want to be? Does the thought of going into work each day drive you crazy? Do you wake up in the middle of the night by work related work nightmares, or work mares'? Take a deep breath my friend, and let's talk about how to go about getting that dream job you've always wanted.

Be clear on what you want

Sure we all have an idea of what our dream job would be, but quite often those fanciful thoughts are pipedreams in relationship the reality and stress the job would ultimately entail. Do your due diligence. Talk to someone who is doing that job now. Find out all the pros and cons to see if it truly is what you want to do. Often we find those jobs that seem to let people golf on Monday mornings are a lot more labour intensive than we realize.

Get proper training

If you want to succeed in this world you need to be trained property. Only a fool would think that they can go out and compete in our current employment environment without a solid education. Find out what training you need to get the job you want. You have to go back to school. Some may say that they don't want to spend the money or the time. If it takes 3 years to complete your course, where would you be in 3 years if you didn't take the course? You'll be at the very same place in life. Do yourself a favour and get those "get it quick" schemes out of your head.

Volunteer

I used to work for a company that used co-op students who wanted experience in their field of study. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience and insight into your dream profession while building a reputation for yourself that you may use as references down the road. Making a name for yourself takes time. Start as early as you can.

Changing careers doesn't have to be a nerve racking experience. You owe it to yourself to make sure you are well prepared in your education and experience before you hit the pavement. The competition for jobs is fierce, but with some effort and perseverance, you'll have your dream job and love going into the office every Monday morning.
