Getting The Right Aluminum Loading Ramp For Your Motorcycle Or Atv
Whether you have an ATV, dirt bike, or street bike
, chances are that you have had to transport it from your home to another location at some point. And if you do that by loading it into the back of your pickup or onto a trailer, then you've used a ramp. An aluminum loading ramp can do the job safely and easily, even if you're loading solo.
Aluminum loading ramps are the ramp of choice by most sportsmen. That's because they are lightweight, solid and easy to maneuver. But there is a lot more to these ramps.
You have probably got thousands invested in your quad or motorcycle, not to mention your pickup. If you ride motocross or hunt for instance, you're no doubt aware of how important it is to properly maintain equipment as well as using it safely.
Loading and unloading from your truck or trailer is where safety begins. For starters you need a ramp that is capable of holding enough weight. You need to consider the weight of the quad or bike, any accessories that are attached, as well as the weight of the person who will be doing the loading. When you add all that up, you can see why a couple of 2x4's is just not going to be a good option.
When you have figured out the weight capacity needed, you can go ahead and choose from a wide variety of ramps. Folding ramps allow for easy, secure storage. While you are en route, it's easy to find a place for a ramp that folds to fit beside your bike or quad. And you won't have to drive with the tailgate down like you would if the ramp was too long to fit in your truck bed.
When you arrive at the trail head or track, you probably lock up your vehicle while you ride. Aluminum ramps that fold can be locked inside your vehicle so they are still there when you get back.
A good overall choice for a ramp is an arched aluminum loading ramp. These ramps are really handy for loading larger quads as well as lawn tractors. Since they can also be folded, they are easy to store.
The preferred kinds of ATV loading ramps are either bi-fold or tri-fold. Be sure the ramp you choose is wide enough for your quad to fit with enough room to spare for you to walk beside it. It's a good idea to use a ramp with an extender to make the slope less steep if it's necessary.
Many motorcycle loading ramps may be single narrow ramps. When you use a bi-fold or tri-fold aluminum loading ramp to load your motorcycle make sure the ramp can handle the load safely. This is especially important if you are loading a street bike because of the additional weight.
An important consideration, if you are going to be loading or unloading in bad weather, is to choose a ramp with a non skid surface. You don't want your quad sliding off the edge of the ramp because the surface is slippery. A good choice is a ramp with a textured surface or rubberized coating.
It's a good idea to get a ramp that comes with safety straps and/or an attaching lip.
The straps allow you to secure the ramp to your tailgate so the ramp doesn't move while you are loading or unloading. They can also be used to secure the ramps in the bed of your pickup while you are in transit, to avoid damaging your load or your pickup.
A nice feature to have is the attaching lip. This fits snugly against your tailgate and keeps the ramp securely in place. It comes with a rubber pad so you don't have to worry about scratching your tailgate. This is especially useful if you have to load or unload unassisted.
By choosing the right aluminum loading ramp for your motorcycle or ATV, loading and unloading can be safe and worry free.
