With a screw system, the friction of the pellets rubbing against each other and the walls of the tube are enough to begin heating and melting the plastic, although the barrel is also lined with electric heating bands. When the plastic pellets melt sufficiently, the liquid is forced into the desired mold. More plastic is pushed in a second time so that all the little nooks and crannies of the mold will be completely filled. The plastic is allowed to cool, and the newly formed part is ejected from the mold.

Mold designers have to compensate for the shrinkage factor of plastic by increasing the size of the mold precisely the amount of shrinkage; otherwise, the finished plastic parts will be the wrong size or will have other weaknesses.

Metal powders mixed with custom plastic powders can also be injection molded. First, the metal and plastic powders are bonded, which allows the metal to be moved into the mold. The mold is filled and the part is cooled, and then the plastic must be unbonded from the metal and removed. Different metal injection companies have different equipment and methods of doing this, so processes vary greatly depending on the types and brands of plastic powders used and how the powders are bound and unbound.
