Getting more out of your IT recruitment agency (a candidate's perspective)

If you are looking for your next role in IT, it is worth thinking about how you can strengthen your relationship with your IT recruitment agency.

The number of companies using IT recruitment agencies to assist with their hiring strategies has grown a great deal in recent years, so it is important that you have a full understanding of how it works, and what steps you can take to improve your chances of getting to the interview phase.

If you can think of a time when you were confident you were right for a role but didn't get so much as an interview, some of the following points might be pertinent to you. And even if you can't remember such an occasion, the following points can still provide a useful insight into how you might be able to gain a competitive edge over your rivals.

1.) Keep your CV up to date. This point cannot be stressed enough, and is a common reason why IT professionals frequently miss out on good positions. If, in the previous 6 months, you have acquired some new skills or worked on some new projects and this has not yet been added to your CV, this could significantly lower your chances when your agency searches their database for suitable candidates.

2.) It might seem obvious, but remember to promote yourself to your IT recruitment agency as you would the hiring company. An IT recruitment agency is there to represent you, but they are also assessing you against their clients' requirements. It is therefore important that you portray yourself as a model professional whenever you are in contact with your IT recruitment agency, which is likely to feed back to the agency's client.

3.) Go the extra mile. Given the current high levels of unemployment in the UK, it is more important than ever to stand out from the crowd. If your IT recruitment agency has asked you to put together a separate document or tweak your CV slightly, you should allocate a reasonable amount of time to do so. Think about how you can go the extra mile to show your commitment to the application.
