Once you have left the misty mountains of the Braulio Carrillo National Park, you will feel the humidity of the Caribbean ooze into your car. Air-conditioning at the ready! Now that you are at sea level, the landscape is pretty much flat but lush, green farmland. The cattle farms, filled with white hang-necked cows, give way to plantations of bananas and pineapples. As you near the port city of Limon, familiar brand names, such as Del Monte and Chiquita have their shipping containers piled up in readiness to transport fruit back to your home country! If you have an interest in seeing how pineapples are grown and harvested, follow signs for the Pineapple Farm Tour, just outside Siquirres.

Closer to Limon, you will see Veragua Rainforest signposted. To visit this biological center, take the turn-off from the highway for Liverpool and continue south for about 12 kilometers. The newly opened attraction boasts a canopy tour, aerial tram ride and rainforest trails with highlights such as insect and frog centers. If you plan to stop here, give yourself plenty of time for your visit so you can enjoy all that Veragua has to offer.

Some tourists do stop in Limon itself, although many choose to skip the rather faded colonial port to travel further down the coast. There are historical buildings here such as the old post office, which offer a glimpse of Limon's more prosperous past. You can also visit popular beaches, such as Playa Bonita. For those heading to Tortuguera National Park, Moin is the usual departure point to travel to the third most popular park in Costa Rica. If you wish to get straight down to the Southern Caribbean turn right at the crossroads directly after the large cemetery on entering Limon and follow the coast road to your destination.
