Gianni Truvianni's "New York's Opera Society" Conclusion

My mother's party had come and gone but the memories of the three ladies who had filled my evening lingered in my thoughts. The ladies I have in mind are the ones I felt for different reasons would go on to become a big part of my life. First their was Gosia, who had by then become the woman I knew I was going to be with for a long time and who had truly put on a great performance that evening. The other two were Anna and Svetlana, who for reasons as diverse as they were from one another had come to interest me immensely.

Anna was a girl of beauty, who I could see by the way she looked at me while I was singing that she had become a great fan of mine and it was precisely people like her who made what I did; that is being an opera singer mean something. She though not being knowledgeable about opera, was a person who strived to gain a greater appreciation for it and I could see by her enthusiasm that she was going to be one of those fans who not only would support me but opera. As for what kind of relationship we would have in the future, this I can not say but if the way we looked and talked to each other for that brief moment is anything to go by; we would end up being what can be labeled as special friends.

Last but not least there was Svetlana, who had made an enormous impression on me by the feelings I saw her display when she talked and went in to that story of her failed attempt at becoming a ballerina. I had heard her sing before I met her and now I knew that all she put into her singing came from within; it was her spirit taking over the souls of the characters I had seen and heard her portray. I could just imagine her putting as much passion (word meaning suffering in Latin) in to those parts that really required a singer to do so; like Gilda (Rigoleto), Siglinde (Die Valkure), Violeta (La Traviata), Tatiana (Eugene Onegin) and many others. I knew then when I saw her that this was a singer whom I would love to perform with. The one who was going to bring out great performances from me as I from her. She was a true opera diva; not just a great voice but actress, which in opera singing was just as important as having a thick voice.

Now that "the party" was in the past; it was fair to say that the school year as well as the opera year were on their way. It being a case that from now on, for not only myself as well as my friends and Gosia; till the summer it was going to be nothing but getting ready for exams and recitals. Some people might get the impression that because we were studying something we truly loved that our studies would therefore be a labor of love; which to a certain extent it was but what some of these people were not aware of was that like with every other discipline. This one also required doing things that after a while became not only routine but monotonous, such as me having to sing the same scales over and over again. Like anything else there were always those arias and songs that I had to sing during my lessons, that frankly

speaking I could not stand.

If there was one song that I had to sing over and over, which I had come to really detest; not only because of the fact that I disliked it but because I was always required to sing it (not only for school but for people who often requested it); it was "Ave Maria" by Schubert. Yes, I can say without any doubt in my mind that there were a lot of things about studying to be a tenor that were not to my liking but I did them because I knew that these things though not to my liking would make me the singer I wanted to be.

If truth be said most musicians don't like practicing; the reason being that practicing does not mean playing ones favorite songs on ones chosen instrument but going over certain exercises (such as scales) again and again and again; till one did them instinctively or playing certain musical pieces or parts of them (particularly those that were giving us trouble) repeatedly or until we got them down pat.

The Opera season itself ended with the return of summer, as did the school year which saw us graduate ready to take over the opera world and continue its legacy which had been started by Monteverdi, so many centuries ago when he wrote the first ever opera entitled "Orpheus".

During that year, Gosia also went on to complete her studies. Her getting her diploma like the rest of us while at the same time singing a contract with Dan Fox to record several CDs of Chopin's music. My mother as was expected went on to get the position she was after at the Metropolitan Opera and immediately started implementing the changes she had been looking to make. The year that followed also was one of stupendous success for both Svetlana and her husband, Vladimir; both taking giant steps in becoming huge stars. Svetlana's raise to stardom came aided by my mother, who after receiving her new position increased the Met's repertoire of Russian operas, which Svetlana naturally took main roles in. Of course, not everything that happened to my opera friends and I during this past year was opera related, for example Barbara and Brad as well Gosia and I became engaged to be married; while Amanda and Arturo got wed in one of the grandest ceremonies I had ever seen.

Their wedding like most was followed by a honeymoon which they took in Poland; where they not accidentally ran into Barbara, Brad, Gosia and me. The rest of us going at the same time to Poland, on a four week trip that also included visits to countries such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Hungary, and Romania. This a trip on which Amanda and Arturo ended up joining us for; as ours was a society that kept together.
