For 2013, the tried and true Maestro suspension system remains unchanged; still utilising four sealed bearing pivots and 2 short linkages to create a virtual pivot point, resulting in efficient pedalling and control. The 2013 Reign frame gives you the best of Giants aluminium technology, using Giants custom 6000 series aluminium and not their more basic 6061 aluminium. The frame also get the new Over Drive 2 head tube standard which is up to 30% stiffer than a standard tapered head tube, because it uses a large top bearing; a must for ultimate steering precision and unwanted flex.

The Reign 1 comes equipped with a complete Fox suspension package. For 2013 Fox have created an improved rider friendly tuning platform called CTD. On the front and rear suspension there is a lever which controls low-speed compression and has 3 settings; climb, trail and descend (CTD). Turning the lever in Climb mode creates a very firm ride, the best setting for climbing. The Trail setting results in moderate compression so it creates the best all-round setting. Use this when the trail has constant undulations, or if you cant be bothered flicking from Climb to Descend on a regular basis. The last mode is Descend and as you have probably guessed has the least amount of compression of the three settings, resulting in a plush ride. In addition to the new CTD damper, the fork uses Foxs TALAS feature, where travel can be adjusted between 120mm to 150mm.

The 2013 Giant Reign 1 is equipped with the brand new Shimano Deore SLX group set. In past years, ever since its inception, it has been a firm favourite with gravity and all mountain riders everywhere; being very similar to the higher-end Deore XT but at a much more affordable level, with weight the only penalty to pay. In typical fashion Giants value for money reputation shines through, as every single component is SLX and they havent cheapened the bike by using inferior components. Shimano have wisely kept the SLX brakes identical for 2013. There was simply no change necessary, because they are one of the best that are on the market. The cranks are visually different, using a larger 4 bolt spider and crank arm, which will appeal to the larger riders among us or the naturally insane who love big drops, big jumps and big landings. The rear derailleur gets the friction clutch which has a on/off switch. The on switch stiffens the spring inside the rear derailleur which results in reduced chain movement and preventing the chain from coming off on those high speed technical descents. The addition of an MRP chain guide on the front crank also helps in keeping the chain inline and a bash guard stops any rocks from damaging the rings of the crank.
