Gift Baskets - Should You Make Your Own
Gift baskets are a wonderful way to show your appreciation for a special person on any occasion or holiday
. However, medical conditions or diet restrictions can limit the type of items put into a gift basket. This last holiday season, we decided to build baskets for several people and the experience is worth sharing. This past holiday season, we gave gift baskets to several friends and family. All of the baskets we gave were hand crafted and included items for friends who have medical conditions and diet restrictions. The experience gave rise to the question Is it cheaper to buy gift baskets or make your own? There are some advantages to going either way. It also allows you to take into consideration any medical conditions, diet restrictions or special interests. This is a wonderful way to get a unique gift that caters to someones special interest, hobby or sport. We discovered that knowing what not to put into a basket is as important as selecting the items that go into it. If a person is lactose intolerant or diabetic, there are some foods that absolutely must be avoided. It was handy to make a list of items (especially dietary restrictions) not to put in the baskets. If you are looking for ideas, find out what the recipients favorite foods are, look at their hobbies or favorite relaxation or sports activities. Ther are lots of ways to find out what to put in a basket. Making your own basket requires a lot of thought and effort to get it right. Just finding all the things to put in the baskets was time consuming. It was necessary to go shopping to get all the material needed and it was not possible to find everything at one store. Baskets, fillers, food items, wine and a variety of nuts were included to improve the variety. And a lot of time was used to find unique food items that fit the medical conditions we were focusing on. After we obtained all the material we needed, putting a basket together that approached those you see in the stores took some doing. Fortunately, one of us (not me) has a gift for crafts and we ended up with beautiful, professional looking gift baskets that the recipients could enjoy without worrying about their medical conditions. We ended up with a basket for a friend that is lactose intolerant, one who owns tropical fish and a family with no restrictions. Taking into consideration the time shopping and cost of material that went into the baskets, it would have been much cheaper and easier to buy a commercially made basket and have it mailed or drop shipped to the recipients. After going through the trouble of making gift baskets, we found many, many stores online that offer baskets tailored to fit almost any medical condition or special need. We learned that making a gift basket is not something that can be done quickly. I wouldnt recommend it unless you have lots of time to consider the needs of the recipients and can take the time to look for unique, special items to go into the gift. However, making the gift baskets from scratch was fun and allowed us to make unique gifts for some special people. And in this case, the satisfaction we received and the appreciation of the people receiving the baskets more than made up for the difference in cost. After all, the appreciation of a friend is something that is difficult to put a price tag on.
