The egg holder or egg tray is one of the most unique presents at any time of the year.

These lovely egg trays are a staple in the South of France, particularly in the Provence. Most of these are ceramic, hand decorated egg trays, which are made in a mold but hand painted. They can be just one colour, usually in the deep reds, yellows or blue of the Provence, or beautifully decorated on a nice yellow background.

These egg trays or egg holders are not handmade. It would most likely be impossible to get the right shape for eggs for any potter hence the mould. But they are still totally individual since they are hand painted, at least the ones coming from the French Provence.

In England and the rest of the UK we still believe that eggs must be kept in the fridge to keep them cold. But that is not so. Egg shells are porous and pick up all the smells of other food in the fridge.

It will not kill you but it does not enhance the quality of the egg flavour.

When I bought my first ceramic egg tray or egg holder I started to leave it out in the kitchen, made space in our fridge where the egg boxes used to be for other things and had a decorative item in the kitchen that now holds my eggs.

We eat a lot of eggs (after the NHS announced that it IS good to eat eggs again!) either scrambled, as an omellet, soft boiled, usually on Sunday mornings with a bit of toast, or hard boiled as a snack in the middle of the day. It is, actually, the perfect meal in the middle of the day, is a big part of any diet as it is pure protein and it is delicious.

But back to the perfect gift idea.there are so many people who are looking for the gift for the person who has everything. Well, I guarantee you, that, at least in this country, they do not have the ceramic egg tray or egg holder !

The amount of men coming into my friends shop who happens to sell these egg trays or boxes or holders before Christmas or Mothers Day saying what can I give to my Mother who has everything? and leave the shop relieved and stress free knowing that they found something the Mother will not yet have, was just amazing.
