Give The Front Of Your Home A More Imposing Look With The Latest In Arched Doors

In Edwardian times, arched doors were a common feature

, especially of the town houses of the day. They were used to give a sense of grandeur to the entrance to a property, by creating an effect that it was higher than a typical house entrance. Of course, this was an illusion, made possible by the curve of the top of the door.

It would be easy to think that the demand for arched door styles had died out a long time ago. But with town houses now very much in vogue among house builders, their popularity is being undergoing a revival, as the style offers a welcome visual break from the boxy appearance of many new houses.

In a house which where the height is considerably greater than the width, arched doors can give this long and narrow look a welcome sense of perspective. The most readily recognised arched door must be that of Number 10 Downing Street. That door has an arched frame within a rectangular one, and it is perhaps because this door has become so synonymous around the world with upmarket streets in London and other big cities that arched front doors are enjoying a new phase of popularity.

Arched doors come in a surprising array of styles, especially when they are manufactured from the latest composite materials. These offer the perfect union between uPVC and timber frames, bringing together the smooth, clean looks and ease of maintenance of the former with the massive choice of styles, colours and finishes which is the main selling point of the latter.

There is a huge choice of configurations of arched doors in UK, and they come either as single units, or with integral glazed panels at either side or above the door. It is even possible to specify different heights for the optional sidelights the glazed area at the side of them to suit the look of an individual house.

These sidelights are instrumental in determining the amount of light which an arched door frame allows to pass through. The larger the glass area, the more light will be able to flood into the area immediately behind the door. So an arched composite door with large, deep sidelights make a tremendous difference to the ambience in a houses lobby or hallway, and in some cases even create an illusion that it is larger than it really is.
