When you look in the mirror, do you feel that the person staring back at you truly reflects who you are and the way you feel on the inside? For most aging adults, the answer is no. According to a recent study completed by Cheerios, older adults feel younger than they look, with many reporting they feel anywhere from 10-15 years younger than their chronological age, in other words, 50 is the new 40!

In another report, called the 2010 Del Webb Baby Boomer Survey, Boomers who are turning 50 this year plan to retire a median of four years later than 50-year-olds in 1996. In addition, approximately 40% of both younger and older baby boomers have taken up a new activity or hobby in the past few years, and more than 50% report that they work out on a regular basis. This is without a doubt an active generation set on pursuing an active and vital lifestyle for the rest of their days.

To today's mature adult, the concept of old age is but a state of mind, which can be thwarted by staying active physically, mentally, socially and spiritually. While this outlook may keep us young at heart, the aging process still takes a toll on our physical appearance, hence why the gap between real age and perceived age grows wider with each year. As a population who is continually seeking ways to look and feel younger for as long as possible, many boomers are turning to cosmetic surgery to help them look on the outside the way they feel on the inside.

Cosmetic surgery is more accepted now than it has been in previous generations, no longer reserved for the rich and famous, aesthetic enhancement has become something sought by many for a variety of reasons. As boomers stay in the work force longer, a number of men and women are turning to procedures like eyelid surgery, Botox and other procedures to help give them an edge over their younger co-workers. It's not just women either, there has been a significant surge in the number of older men making regular visits to their cosmetic surgeon's office. Just like women, men want to look as young as they feel. They work out, they eat right and treatments like Botox have become a part of their habitual health regimen.

The Mommy Makeover has become a popular procedure for both younger and older adults, which combines a number of procedures like tummy tuck surgery, breast lift, liposuction and more. For those who do not wish to undergo major surgeries that require extensive recovery time, there are less invasive procedures like the Freestyle Lift that can take years off the face with little pain or downtime required.

The bottom line is boomers are aging, but they are not ready to concede their physical appearance to father time just yet, and cosmetic enhancement is quickly becoming their weapon of choice against the aging process.
