Glass has properties which make it very suitable for kitchen use. As the material is nonporous it is very easily maintained, it does not stain for starters, should not degrade over time and can look as stunning as the day it was installed.

Another great feature of having a glass splashback is that mould build up will not occur, which unfortunately is a common problem with tiling.

When enquiring about glass splashbacks, be sure to find out whether or not the panel will be toughened.

This is very important as this is the deciding factor as to how resistant it is to heat and impact. Many splashback suppliers do not toughen all of their glass splashbacks to keep the price down. This is no good if the splashback is installed near a hob or oven for example. Heat is able to crack an un-toughened panel quite easily.

Cut-Outs for wall unit and plug sockets can be machined into the glass during the manufacturing stage only, once a panel is toughened, no further work can take place on it.

There are two main glass types used for splashbacks these days, Clear/Float and Low Iron/Opti-White.

Steer clear of any supplier using Clear/Float glass, as this has a strong green tint to it, which has an undesirable effect on your colour of choice.

Using Low-Iron/Opti-White you are able to choose from almost any colour without the glass compromising the finished effect.

If you are competant with a tape measure, then you will have no problem ordering a panel made to your measurements, which will help you keep the costs down.
