Glbt:permanent Hair Removal

Hair removal is a necessary concern for many members of the GLBT community

. Champion Laser has extensive experience with work related to trangender hair removal and preparation for people in transition for gender reassignment surgery.

We understand the special needs of our clients and respect the need for privacy and discretion.

Transgender Hair Removal

Normal male levels of testosterone leads to body hair growth, however these patterns are considerably different than female hair growth. Permanent hair removal can be an asset for people that are trying to alter those patterns to suit their preference for look and lifestyle choices.

Trans women rely on us to help lessen or eliminate hair growth in beard and sideburns, nose and/or ear hair, pubic hair extending to thighs, chest, torso and back hair, leg hair and underarm hair.

Permanent hair reduction is accomplished with either laser or electrolysis hair removal treatments. Neither method is superior to the other when it comes to hair removal each has their place in the process. At Champion Laser we do, in fact, use both systems in some cases for best results. Lasers, however, are used whenever possible because they allow removal of hair in the fastest, most efficient way.

We have to address all the challenges of different skin and hair colour with each individual we work with. Champion Laser requires that each client meet with us for a consultation (approximately 45 minutes) and test patch before beginning treatment. There is no charge for this consultation and no obligation. At this time we will determine what the treatment process will be for you to get the best results, and discuss this with you along with available options.

The process of removing a significant proportion of body hair in multiple areas can be extensive. Multiple treatments are necessary to permanently remove hair in any area because hair grows in continuous cycles; it goes through stages of growth that start at active, progress to a regressive stage of atrophy and then a stage where hair falls out. In order to achieve permanent reduction, the hair follicle should be treated by laser or electrolysis during the active stage of hair growth, when the target parameters necessary for permanent hair destruction are present. Since only about 15-25% of hairs are in this active growing stage at the same time, repeated sessions are necessary to synchronize with the active (anagen) growth cycle.

As a general guideline, 5-8 laser hair removal treatments per body area (face, legs, chest, back, etc.), are usual, but this can vary with each person based on gender, hair and skin types, and individual characteristics. People with dark or black skin will generally require more laser treatments than people with fair skin because the wavelength of the laser has to be adjusted to keep the laser from acting on the pigment in the skin. 6-10 laser treatments per area might be a more realistic expectation for these people. Hair color is also a critical factor, darker hair, of course, being easiest to treat.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

Most trans people use HRT to help achieve the type of skin/hair/body that they desire.HRT changes the balance of sex hormones in their bodies. In the case of male to female reassignment, HRT will reduce hair growth after months of use. However, it CAN NOT destroy or otherwise influence hair that exists at the time that HRT is started. Rather, some form of permanent hair removal is necessary to treat this hair.

Conversely, trans men may find that HRT causes hair growth that they may consider excessive. This can be managed with one or more treatments to reduce the hair to a desired level.

Gender Reassignment Surgery

Gender reassignment surgery involves many processes, often requiring skin to be taken from one part of the body to graft it to the surgical site.

As with any plastic surgery, the skin to be grafted is chosen for its compatible properties including skin thickness and sensitivity, but often the area that the skin is being taken from contains hair follicles that would not normally be present in the area receiving the graft.

It is frequently necessary to remove hair from one site on the body to prepare it to be grafted to another area, and it is preferable to do this prior to the surgery rather than afterward because the skin will recover more quickly. In this case it is necessary to seek assistance to eliminate hair follicles.
