Glendale Chiropractic Essay - The Bones

Glendale Chiropractic Essay - The Bones

Our bones give our body structure and form. They are covered by skin like material called periosteum. Under this periosteal covering there is a fluid that bathes and nourishes the bones.

Injures to the bone occur in varying degrees. A break is a complete severing of bone. A greenstick fracture is a cracking of the bone. A stress fracture or a fatigue fracture is a very small fracture or crack in the bone that occurs over a period of time, usually rhythmic and repeated stress like running.

Bones usually heal fairly well; in fact, healed fractures often leave the bone stronger than it was before the injury. Its as though you have added a coating of super-glue around the bone.

Stress fractures of small bones usually take six to eight weeks to heal; other fractures may take between 2 and 12 months to repair, depending on the bone and where its fractured.

If a fracture is not properly diagnosed and treated, in can heal in a poor position and create ongoing problems.

Bone pain is not always caused by fractures. You can bruise a bone by banging something or by a repeated pounding motion. The resulting condition is called periostitis in which the bone covering swells with extra fluid to protect and heal the bruised bone beneath it.

Bone spurs are another source of bone pain. A spur is an abnormal bone growth that creates a spur like bump on the bone. If a spur occurs in the foot and is painful, it may have to be removed.

However, there are nonpainful spurs; for example, if there is a spur at the outside of the knee, it may be aesthetically unappealing, but it may be harmless and not need to be removed.

It's slways wise to consult a Chiropractor if you experience any bone pain or discomfort.
