Dubbed as the Juvenile derby event of the year

, the Poonawallas Breeders Multimillion race has grown considerably in size and scope since its inception over two decades ago. The brainchild of Poonawallas Stud Farms, the glittering event offers a whopping Rs. 10 million as prize money in addition to a trophy that is reportedly worth Rs.100, 000. The race itself pits the best of the countrys juvenile horse racers against one another in a nail biting competition that sees three year old studs race across 1400 metres to the finish line.

An international race of a grand scale by any measure, the event also sees Indian Veers ride alongside foreign jockeys in a competition like no other. The punters on the other hand put up a mega jackpot of nearly Rs. 500,000 and three 50,000 tananlas in addition to forecast pools worth Rs.5000 each in every single race. The first Multimillion race took place nearly 21 years ago on March 11th, 1990 when the prize money was but a million rupees. The first series of races attracted 22 top-notch juvenile competitors, whose passion and verve encouraged sponsors to make the event grander with each passing year, inspiring more and more top-class studs to participate and take home the prize.

Typically held on the third Sunday in February each year at Mumbais Mahalakshmi racecourse, the event has also grown to include more activities in addition to the races themselves. This of course includes the PBMM day where a host of fun filled activities are on offer for those who come to the races. Other highlights include the awards handed out to the best dressed lady and gentleman in attendance while a prize is also reserved for the best hat. Attracting the crme de la crme of the racing world and a constellation of Bollywood stars, the races also include high tea and a Fashion Show making it one of the most highly anticipated events in the Mumbai social calendar.
