The cloud has failed roughly 150,000 Gmail users, whose e-mails have been deleted and accounts disabled by a mysterious glitch.

Tens of thousands of Gmail users have at least temporarily lost months or years of messages and chat dialogues after Google accidentally reset their accounts.

The bug left affected an estimated 150,000 users with blank slates. Surfers who re-established accounts were confronted only by welcome to Gmail messages. Any message archive was nowhere to be seen in these cases, at least for now, as illustrated by a screenshot in an article by Engadget on the calamity.

Initial reports suggested as many as half a million accounts were compromised, the years' worth of e-mails potentially permanently erased. Google acknowledged the issue at 3:09 p.m. EST Sunday, eventually determining that the problem affected just 0.08% of users, or about 150,000 accounts. And as of 10 a.m. EST Monday, the company was still working to fully resolve the issue.

"Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future," the company wrote on its Apps Status Dashboard. "Google engineers are working to restore full access. Affected users will be temporarily unable to sign in while we repair their accounts."

You have a few basic options when backing up your Gmail. Do you want to store your messages on another e-mail client or do you want to keep a local copy on your personal harddrive?

The simplest option is to open a second account on another (free) e-mail service and set up your first account so that a copy of all incoming messages are forwarded to the new address. Similarly convenient is the pay-for-protection route. A Google worker called Michelle posted a message saying: "We're looking into this issue right now. I know how important your messages are to you. Thanks for reporting on the forum."

On Sunday a Google spokesman told the Huffington Post: "We've already fixed the problem for some individuals. Our engineers are working as quickly as possible and we hope to have everything back to normal soon. We're very sorry for the inconvenience to our customers."
